It’s been three months of working on Halloween so far and we have two months left to finish all the things we want to build. We got a lot done this weekend which makes taking off for labor day weekend ok!

Zac finished his fiji mermaid carousel creature this weekend. He gave it a custom sea foam candy sparkle finish. All the girls now want to make their creatures sparkle! Now my dragon will have to sparkle so it matches.

Patty finished her creatures head (after having to work for 11 days straight with no time off thank you very much). Then she got it attached to her creature’s body with some help from Joe and a lot of epoxy.

Tricia continued the super intense and awkward job of macheing the conjoined twins Roofus and Doofus. There are a lot of angles on those guys!

Kendra did some detail work on her gryphon’s wings and then started on a giant pair of hands!

I took off Friday and worked all three days of the weekend on one prop. Here it is so far:

YAY! This weekend marked the glorious return of Zac and Tricia to the haunted garage! A lot got done, and progress was made.

Zac finished the mermaid build up and the paper mache all in one weekend. Full steam ahead!

Kendra finished up the mache on the gryphon body on Saturday, and mached the wings, hands, and other odds and ends on Sunday.

Trica bulked up and started mache on her abomination to God and all that is decent in the World this weekend. I didn’t get a shot of the mache, but She’ll be wrapping it up next weekend, I’ll snap some shots then.

Patty has been working on the head to her carousel creature. 10 straight work days hasn’t kept her from kicking ass. I think this week she’ll be adding lips and teeth, so it’s gonna look pretty cool next week (and less birdlike)!

What a nice summer day in the garden indeed, butterflies flitting about, birds bathing in the fountain, and praying mantis crawling up your leg. These guys are standing here so I can block in the prop that goes between them. This prop:

Anyone hungry for hotdogs?

Here is a close up of the characters from earlier this week:

I have been sketching ideas for this years haunt for the last two years. Most of these aren’t going to get used, or not used this year, but I thought you might enjoy a peek behind the scenes.

This is possible the entrance to the maze that will be in the driveway. Might not make it this year.

One of the game booths we will be building. Bowl a Skull.

This is Zac’s sketch of his game booth, Drown the Clown. It’s one of those squirt the water in the mouths of clowns to win a race.

We have already made two of these ideas. These will go in Candy Creep’s cart. The pinwheel is not a turd ROXY! But I like that idea. Needs some corn.

THis is the latest and most likely the final design.

These are some of the ideas I had over the last year.

Some carousel creature sketches.

There will be more sketches to come. If you want to see more, just look under the “Concept Art” category.

Happy birthday to Zac who turned 29 on Monday! We went to the Mummies of the World exhibit at the California Science Center on Saturday for Zac’s birthday. Dead people really do look like paper mache. I got a great book about the exhibit that is like 4 inches thick and has tons of pictures of decay, mummies, and other creepy stuff.

On Sunday Kendra and Patty got started on the mache of their carousel creatures. I forgot to bring my camera, so there is only a few pics from my phone, whose battery was near dead.

I worked on the carousel, finishing the construction of the assembly linkages. I have built it to break down into 7 easily stored pieces that go together like a puzzle in about 30 minutes. Here’s me fitting the top:

There is still a long way to go on this carousel, and it is eating up a lot of our build time. One more hour of work next week, and then it will just be a matter of decoration and painting. The fun part.

We are down two builders this year (at least for now) and we might have to scale back. I am fighting to finish all the things we have planned. To get it all done, I will have to work at home on the weeknights doing anything and everything I can. I have been working out the build schedule, I’ll post a screenshot when I’m done. It’s gonna be way worse than last year’s schedule.

This week I took off Friday to work in the garage with Patty on her day off. It was a nice day and we got alot done. We nearly completed the pre-mache build of our carousel creatures.

My dragon got wings, a tail, and some feet.

Patty’s Pony of Doom got very close to being finished also.

On Saturday Kendra came out and nearly finished her Gryphon/Griffin.

Night Club Excuses In Dallas

I got started on another extra evil skeleton.

I also redid the skeleton build up of the Mermaid, which was too small in comparison to the other creatures. I gave it little creepy arms and hands. I also added a larger fan like tail.

This weekend was very productive even with a birthday and low attendance on Sunday. Saturday was Tricia’s birthday, she turned 24. Happy Birthday Trish! Thanks to vicoden I was able to carefully work on finishing the frame of the carousel so now with about 1 hours worth of installing some bolts and shaving two pieces of wood, we’ll be ready to start wallpapering and painting the carousel. Patty has been working on the fabric top for the caorsel, and she laid out some colors to look at. We decided to limit the colors to red, gold, orange, and black. Purple made it just a bit too colorful.

Kendra made big progress on her Gryphon. I helped bend some wings out of PVC, and showed her how to connect the ribs to the pelvis, (it her first creature ever made). She also made some feet and claws. Next week we’ll make some wings, give it some feathers around the head, and add a tail too.

On Sunday afternoon I got some work done on my dragon. I gave it little stubby legs, bent some PVC for wings and a tail. Monday Night I added some more details to the heads.

Ad Agency

Patty is almost done with her cannon. She made some wheels and added the fuse holder. Now she must add tires and pimps it out with bling. I bet it will be done this weekend.

We harvested some pumpkins from Patty’s garden. The patch has gone wild, so we had cut these ripe pumpkins to make room for the others growing next to them. If these last, we should have around 20 pumpkins by the big day. I love pumpkin patches…sigh.

Pm Lounge Dallas

It was such a nice weekend weather-wise. Spring returns to Southern California at the End of July. It was unseasonably cool and I loved it.

This weekend we concentrated on building creatures for our carousel. I postponed actually finishing the carousel first because I hurt my back. I am trying to let it heal properly before I return to the “Back-Breaking” work that is left to do.

Zac is building a mermaid. I did the ribs for him in an effort to try and make all of these similar in size. It looks good but the size overall seems too small. We will have to assemble the carousel and eyeball it to see if it is sized right. It might just need to be chunkier. The body of my dragon is next to his mermaid, you can see how it looks smallish by comparison.

Kendra is building her first monster ever, a griffin. I am helping with the hard stuff, but trying to get Kendra comfortable with building these kind of props. She did the ribcage by herself and bent the neck using a heat gun. I am sculpting the head for her. We’ll work together on the wings and other big parts.

Dallas Nightclubs

Patty is building a horse like creature. Will it be a unicorn? zebra giraffe hybrid? The 4th horse of the apocalypse? Stay tuned. I did the ribs on this, and helped repose it after I sorted out some problems with my own prop and Kendra’s griffin.

I started my Three Headed Dragon this weekend. I put the ribs on, and bent the necks to the right position. I got started on bulking them out, but didn’t get much further. I will finish this at home during the week. It will have small wings in the front instead of arms. In the back it will have drumstick type legs with some big claws and a devil shaped tail.

Patty’s cannon is coming along, and her little sidekick is finished. I call him “Mr. Chuckles”.

We plan on finishing the carousel construction next week. Then we’ll figure out if we can fit in all 6 monsters we planned to build. We think we might have made them too big, so we might have to do just 4 monsters, which would be easier.

It had to happen eventually. Our unseasonably cool summer finally got back to the business of being hot as heck. 104f with high humidity. On Saturday it was just Kendra, Patty, and myself. We went over our build list and ate ice cream cones. Sipped cold sodas and chatted, and tried not to sweat.

Patty started building her cannon. This is going to go up on the roof over looking the drive way. It will have a burnt up blucky danging out of the mouth of the cannon and puffs of smoke from a fog machine hidden inside. The cannon is made up of a concrete form with pipe insulation as the lip on the cannon barrel, and last years candy cauldron as the cascabel.

I cast some skulls from the new mold I made of a coyote skull. These will be the basis of some of the carousel creatures’ heads. I figure with a little clay these can become serpent, dragon, or bird skulls.

For our carousel we are going to have six creatures on poles. Now I can’t make them all, and that would be hogging all the fun, but we need them to kind of be the same. They need to be the same general size at least. So to homogenize them a little bit I built the frames all the same. I’ll rough in the ribs and basic body shape, but I’ll leave the number of limbs, size, shape, and position to my fellow haunters.

On Sunday some people had to work, and others (me) went to the beach so nothing got done. This next weekend is supposed to be 20 degrees cooler and we should be able to finish a lot more.

Leadership Lesson #427: If a large project does not progress quickly it will become demoralizing.

This was the 5th weekend working in the garage. After some technical setbacks in the last few weeks, I finally made real progress on the carousel. I rebuilt the center column to be much lighter, and re-skinned it with 1/8′ luan. The fit and finish looks professional now. I also rebuilt the round sections to break down for storage and added some guides and stops to make the pieces interlocking. This will will make assembly much faster! I also redid the support frame to make it much stronger.

Zac and I roughed out a form for the carousel creatures in PVC. The big tube in the center is so that the creatures can be slipped onto the poles on carousel, but easily taken off for storage. Which end is which? I don’t know yet.

I bought a coyote skull to use as the basis of the head for some of the creatures. I am going to make a mold of it and make 7-10 copies. So I started filling the voids with clay, and for a better look I completed the orbital (eyes). The actual eyes aren’t closed circles like a human skull. You can see the actual skull on the left side of the pic, and the fake eye socket on the right. The fake eye socket looks more skull like to me.

I have been scribbling some ideas for carousel creatures during the week so far.
